Maths at Keresley Grange

Maths at Keresley Grange provides opportunities that inspire and challenge. It encourages children to explore, take risks, question and reason throughout.  We help learners prepare for life, in school and beyond, providing them with the essential Maths skills that they need. Maths at Keresley Grange ensures that children make continued connections and build upon previous learning, this along with teaching through Mastery enables children to gain a deep, long-term secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. A focus is placed upon key skills and fluency of facts, ensuring that children are able to apply this knowledge to access problems and to use in their day to day lives. Children are expected to use a wide range of mathematical language to explain their thinking and reason effectively.

 

The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
• reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
• can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions. 

Our Maths curriculum covers statutory objectives from the National Curriculum with the key knowledge, skills and understanding mapped out to allow solid foundations to be built upon and encourage a mastery approach. We follow the White Rose Maths schemes of learning and these underpin our maths curriculum. Maths lessons take place daily. Our sessions start with an anchor task, that provide opportunities for problem solving, collaboration and good quality mathematical talk. Each session provides opportunities to practise arithmetic skills, problem solving and reasoning. Maths vocabulary and sentence stems are modelled clearly and used daily by all learners. All learners work through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. Leaners have access to manipulatives, models, diagrams and representations, which support conceptual understanding and allow connections to be made through different areas of maths.

EYFS and Key Stage One follow the Maths Hub’s Mastering Number programme. This develops pupils' fluency with and understanding of number to build firm foundations for future success in mathematics learning. This programme develops solid number sense, including fluency and flexibility with number facts, which will have a lasting impact on future learning for all children. Key Stage Two build on this with their arithmetic sessions where learners spend time on explicit learning of key facts which is important in the journey towards fluency.

 

 

We use the 99 Club across the school to improve standards of mental fluency. All children will be working towards a club from the 10 club to the Gold club.

Children will practise their Club level in school but can also practise at home using TTRockstars, Maths Shed or the downloadable practice sheets. 

Children will complete set questions during a given amount of time. Children must achieve 100% on three consecutive occasions in order to become part of that club. 

Children will receive a club badge when they are a member.
